Good Morning “Soft Hearts”. Today we are in Jeremiah 24.
2 baskets of figs? One good, one rotten. What’s the point?
Figs and the fig tree in Scripture become imagery for us to compare the degree of Israel’s Spiritual obedience. Obedience results in fruit, no obedience no fruit.
Consider Jesus and the story of the barren fig tree in Mark 11:12-27.
“This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent away from this place to the land of the Babylonians. My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them. I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.”
Jeremiah 24:5-7 NIV
The good and the bad figs . . . the good and the bad of Judah in this chapter represents those who went away, by the LORD’s hand, into Babylon . . . the Bad were those who stayed behind in Judah & Jerusalem, many of whom eventually fled into Egypt. (Vs. 8).
All who repent and place their faith in The Blood of Jesus will be saved (1 John 1:9). We will stumble and fall - the question is how will we respond. Are we soft hearted, ready to learn from The Lords correction? Or… are we hard hearted, set in what we want… dare I say spoiled?
“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
Hebrews 12:11 NIV
Being trained by it requires a soft teachable heart. Love you all! Dig in!
