Good Morning “Contemplators.” Today we are in Psalm 89.
Today’s Psalm is a maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. On the surface it may appear that Ethan is praising God. Look deeper. Remember a maskil is a contemplation… he is considering. Ethan is conflicted. He seems to be weighing Gods promise to make David “King of Kings”, against what appears to be Israel’s destruction. How can David’s throne last forever when things seem so desperate?
What are you thinking right now? Where does your mind go? Did God ever promise to make David’s literal throne last forever? To rule over all the earth? We must remember what we’ve learned. The promise to establish David’s throne forever was NOT as it may have seemed on the surface. It would be the “Son of David”, Jesus who would be King of Kings and Lord of Lords (1 Timothy 6:11-16). The Davidic Covenant can be found in 2 Samuel 7:12-16.
Ethan was stuck on temporal circumstances and missing the big picture! First God wasn’t then, and isn’t yet finished with Israel. Secondly, Gods Covenant with David went way beyond his earthy kingdom, way beyond his son Solomon’s kingdom. Jesus will reign forever!
How often are we tempted to take a promise of God, out of context, without considering the whole of Scripture and wonder if God is Truly Faithful? Rest assured… He is ALWAYS working and He is ALWAYS faithful. It’s likely in our waiting and contemplating, maybe even bellyaching… He’s working to grow us up.
Love you all! Dig in!
