Good Morning “Jesus Followers. Today we are in Psalm 136.
Often some mistakenly think of Jesus only in the New Testament. They might think of the “Christmas Story” and His birth, as the first time He came on the scene.
Jesus was not a human that God chose to deliver those who believe, but rather God who donned humanity. He’s always existed with the Father and The Spirit in perfect Oneness. This is not simply a New Testament concept. John was not some sort of religious radical when he was inspired of God to pen John 1. In fact John was reiterating what God had already spoken through The Old Testament, The Prophet’s, and even this Psalm. I encourage you to read John 1:1-18 then come back to this Psalm and reread it with that context in mind. Pay special attention to the capitalizations in your text - in the opening verses of this Psalm. It’s quite interesting.
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of Lords: His love endures forever.” Psalms 136:1-3 NIV
Did you notice anything strange? Let’s take a look considering the original language…
“Give thanks to YHWH (Yahweh - The personal name of God, or Elohim) for He is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to Elohim of gods His love endures forever. Give thanks to Adon (or Adoni - sovereign controller, Master Lord). Its Greek equivalent is Kyrios, often used for Jesus in the New Testament.) of Lords: His love endures forever.” Psalms 136:1-3 NIV
“In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was with God and The Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”
John 1:1-4 NIV
