Good Morning “Knowing What You Got Before It’s Gone.” Today we are in Psalm 137.
We are blessed to live in a country where we can still meet and worship freely. We are not yet in danger of being taken captive or publicly beheaded as are worshiping Christians is some parts of the world.
Sunday we talked about the privilege we’ve been given to serve Jesus, to proclaim His name, to be His ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20). Do we count it as privilege or a burden. Is it a pain to get up and go to church or a privilege? Is it a priority or an afterthought?
In this Psalm we get a picture of Judah in Babylonian captivity. After taking their worship and obedience to The LORD for granted and turning away, and ignoring Gods many attempts to turn them back, He gave them over to Babylon for 70 years to both discipline them, and to give the land the rest it needed (2 Chronicles 36:15-22, Jeremiah 29:4-10, Daniel 9:2). Now they lament, and long for the time they were able to worship in the temple. Their captors mock their worship, demanding they sing their “songs of joy” - as if to say, “Where is your God now.” (Psalm 137:1-3)
Truth is… He was never far from them. They left Him, He didn’t leave them (Jeremiah 29:11-14, Hebrews 13:5).
The captives long for vengeance (Psalm 137:7-9) but know vengeance is The Lords (Deuteronomy 32:35, Romans 12:19-20). It’s ironic they long for vengeance when they brought Gods judgment on themselves by their own actions. Passing the buck, blaming others for our hardship or trouble is human nature (Hebrews 12:7). Remember Adam in the garden after his sin? He blamed the women, and in the process God Himself. “The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me…” Genesis 3:12 ESV
May we never forget how blessed we are. May we never take for granted the Cost (Jesus) of the privilege we’ve been given to obey and serve Him. (Ephesians 2:8-10, Romans 12:1-2).
Love you all! Dig in!
