Psalm 109

Good Morning “Poor in Spirit.”  Today we are in Psalm 109.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 5:3

We are not clear here as to which of David’s enemies he speaks.  One thing is certain, the evil one is at work - working through his accusers and tormentors.  As I read I was reminded of Jesus and how Judas turned and Peter denied Him.  I was reminded of how we at times do the same.  Oh we may not be as overt as Peter was, but each time we push Him away and choose sin it is a denying of sorts.

We could get hung up here and argue as to the appropriateness of David’s imprecatory prayers.  For us, in this day, through Jesus, we know enough to know we need to be careful calling for Gods justice, particularly on the individual - for we too deserve death (Romans 3:23, 6:23, Romans 12:9).  It is ONLY by the Grace of God through Jesus that we are not condemned ourselves (John 14:6, Romans 8:1).  However; as we have talked before there is nothing wrong in pleading for the ultimate destruction of evil itself.  “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬. That time will come (Revelation 20:10,14).

Pay attention to the posture in which David pleads.  David understands it is not just his physical body that has been attacked but his faith, his testimony.  He seeks redemption but understands it is only by Gods Grace, His unfailing love that he would receive such.   He’s at the end of himself, poor in spirit as it were.  “But you, Sovereign Lord, help me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.” Psalms‬ ‭109‬:‭21‬-‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In the midst of whatever it is we find ourselves struggling with - it’s important for us to remember that we are undeserving of any rescue or redemption… God owes us nothing.  We’ve earned nothing and truly have nothing to offer but faith and obedience.  It’s only by His Grace through Jesus that we have any hope in this life or the next.  We are truly “poor in spirit”… is that our attitude? (John 3:16, Mark 1:15)

Love you all!  Dig in!
