Good Morning “NOT Deist’s”. Today we are in Psalm 135.
The Psalmist begins by reminding us all The LORD (Yahweh) ALONE is great and worthy of our praise! He is greater than all other gods (idols, false gods) that we might put our hope in. We can even hope in our own power, making us, our own idol.
He ALONE is sovereign over ALL things. It’s thunderstorm season here in our area. When we see those big thunder boomers move in, then hear the rumble they produce… when we feel the wind and the rain and see the lightning dart across the sky… where do we give credit? Do we see it as simply a “natural phenomenon”? The Deist believes God indeed created, but He’s uninvolved in His Creation. The testimony of Scripture is exactly the opposite. He is Sovereign over ALL, EVERYTHING! ALL means ALL.
Here the Psalmist urges us NOT to ascribe Praise to anyone or anything else, lest we become like the false gods we worship. God struck down both idol and idol worshiper. Jesus is our only hope, our only redeemer (Roman’s 6:23). The Mercy and Grace of God runs a stark contrast to the default destination we’re all on. That’s why the “Good News” is so “Good”! The “Bad News” is REALLY BAD! It is absolutely essential that we put aside our hope in anything but Jesus, recognize our own depravity, and turn to Him. Jesus Himself illustrated this point well in Luke 7:44-47.
Furthermore He refers back to this Psalm as He rebukes His Disciples for their lack of faith in hoping only in what they could see. He warns them to beware of the yeast of the Pharisees. Compare Psalm 135:15-18, with Mark 8:15-18. All good things for us to remember and apply.
Love you all! Dig in!
