Good Morning “Humble.” Today we are in Isaiah 39.
The King of Babylon heard that Hezekiah was feeling much better. In fact his recovery was supernatural. So… Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent Hezekiah a letter and gift by envoy. Little did Hezekiah know, the King of Babylon may have had other motives. Presumably he needed aid for his rebellion against Assyria (According to the Jewish historian Josephus).
“Hezekiah received the envoys gladly and showed them what was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, the spices, the fine olive oil—his entire armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.” Isaiah 39:2 NIV
What’s the problem? Simply put, these guys weren’t friends. What was Hezekiah’s intent? We can speculate but 2 Chronicles 32:25 tells us he was proud. Was he boasting? Seems that way, and it bit him.
He brought Gods wrath upon himself, Judah and Jerusalem to be sure. He was prideful, and in that let down his guard with little regard for his people or the next generation.
Pride is a funny thing. It’s really misplaced honor and credit isn’t it? We pridefully take credit as though our blessing, our talents, our gifts, our strength, our wealth our whatever… was somehow gained by our own abilities. Wrong - it’s all by Gods Grace (Philippians 4:19, 2 Corinthians 9:8). He even gives us the breath we breathe (Acts 17:25).
“For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?”
1 Corinthians 4:7 NIV
Love you all! Dig in!
