Good Morning “Rooted in Him and His Word”. Today we are in Colossians 2.
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” Colossians 2:6-8 NIV
He is the reason we live. He proved His love by going to the Cross. He is the source of all things. As we remain rooted in Him we receive all we need through the Holy Spirit. In our heads we know He’s all we need, nevertheless; we are easily influenced by other forces. It’s interesting, Paul doesn’t tip toe around the source behind these contrary influences. He straight up calls them “elemental spiritual forces.” He’s not talking about good spiritual forces getting us off track here - so what do you think he’s talking about?
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 NIV
We must be diligent, daily “renewing our minds”, focusing on the God stuff that keeps us on track (Romans 12:2; Joshua 1:8). We must consciously take captive contrary thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5), and instead meditate on things that actually set us up for success through His Word.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8 NIV
I cannot overstate it. We must be in The Word DAILY and know It for It to benefit us in the spiritual battle we are in. Tradition holds that “The man after Gods own heart”, David (Acts 13:22), used Psalm 119 to teach his son Solomon the Hebrew alphabet. Solomon later called “The wisest man that ever lived” (1 Kings 10:23) was credited with penning it! I’d say we should pay attention to it…
“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalms 119:9-11 NIV
We gotta be in The Word and know and apply The Word if we are going to live by The Word! We can’t hide in our hearts what we don’t know.
